    The city on your own terms. Markt and Belfort, Rozenhoedkaai, the Church of Our Lady with the Michelangelo inside, then it goes quiet: the Godshuizen almshouses, the walled Begijnhof, the Minnewater. Halfway round is the Halve Maan brewery, brewing on that spot since 1856. Finishes past the Sint-Janshuis windmill and along the Potterierei.

    Out into open polder to Lissewege, a village of whitewashed houses round a canal that most visitors never reach. Wetlands on the way where redshank, lapwing and heron are ordinary sights if you slow down. Climb the 13th-century tower for a view across the polders in every direction.

    A full day. Out along the Damse Vaart to Damme, where the old town hall looks untouched in five centuries, then a loop north through Koolkerke, Oostkerke, Moerkerke, Hoeke and Lapscheure on the Dutch border. Back across the water on the little Kobus bike ferry.

    The Incanto E-bike Lady 28" 6V. Etrotek DGW07 rear hub with 45 Nm, an Ant Power 418 Wh battery, five assist levels up to 25 km/h and around 70 km of range. Four bikes, two named colourways: The Swan in light blue and The Trappist in deep rose.

    Either model comes with the Garmin, an adjustable helmet, a sturdy lock and a front wicker basket.
