The Dalí museum in Bruges: what you see at the Xpo gallery by the Belfry, and is it worth it?

The Dalí museum in Bruges is the Museum-Gallery Xpo Salvador Dalí, a private gallery in the old market halls at the foot of the Belfry, on the Markt. It shows more than 300 works from the Dalí Universe collection: mostly bronze sculptures, graphic works, glass and furniture, not famous paintings. A ticket costs €10, and it is open every day from 10:00 to 18:00.

What is the Xpo Dalí gallery?

The Xpo is a private gallery, not one of the city museums of Musea Brugge. Its address is the Belfry's, Markt 7, but it is not up the tower: it is in the old market halls around the inner courtyard behind it.

The works belong to Dalí Universe, one of the largest private collections of Dalí's work, whose president is the Italian art dealer Beniamino Levi, who worked with Dalí in the 1960s. The gallery has been open since at least 2008.

    What you will see

    Sculptures

bronzes such as Beethoven's Head, the Surrealistic Angel, the Twisted Christ and the Otorhinological Head of Venus.

    Graphic works

engravings and prints, among them Dalí's illustrations for Alice in Wonderland from 1968.

    Glass and design

coloured glass sculptures made with Daum, furniture and jewellery.

    The setting

in the gallery's words, a décor of mirrors, gold and shocking pink.

Is it worth it? An honest answer

It depends on what you expect. There are no famous oil paintings here; visitors who came for them say so in their reviews. Expect sculpture, prints and design.

Most of the sculptures are editions: bronzes cast from Dalí's models, many of them after his death in 1989. The gallery says so itself: the Surrealistic Angel, for example, was enlarged and cast in Verona in 1992, under the control of Robert Descharnes.

If you like sculpture and Dalí's dreamlike imagery, it is a pleasant hour a few steps from the Markt. With only one day in Bruges, our advice is the Belfry or the Groeninge Museum, which tell you more about the city itself.
